Mahershalahazbaz Gilmore was born on February 16,1974 in Oakland, California to Wilica and Philip Gilmore. As an adult, he was a talented athlete and played basketball. He attended Saint Mary’s College of California on a basketball scholarship, graduating in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications. Shortly after graduating, Ali was an apprentice at the California Shakespeare Festival. He later enrolled in acting at New York University and received his master’s degree in 2000.
