Massachusetts man accused of causing disturbance on flight will face judge
BOSTON (WJAR) — The man accused of causing a disturbance on a flight from Los Angeles to Boston will appear in federal court on Thursday.
Francisco Severo Torres is set to face a federal judge in Boston. He is currently being held at the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls.
Federal prosecutors say Torres allegedly tried to open the exit door of the plane and then attempted to stab a flight attendant with a broken spoon during the Sunday flight.
He is charged with interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon. Torres faces life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
An East Greenwich woman on the flight says several passengers tried to calm Torres down but he just kept getting louder.
Many men from the plane jumped up, followed him, tackled him to the ground and they were probably about four to six of them that sat on top of him to restrain him. The flight crew, you know, immediately had zip ties to zip, tie his feet and his arms,” said Lisa Olsen.In an interview with Massachusetts State Police, Torres told investigators that he went into the bathroom on the plane and broke a spoon in half to make a weapon. He said he wanted to open a door and jump out of the plane.
Olsen also spoke to The National Desk and described what she witnessed. She said Torres was two rows behind her and her daughter.
He was yelling and saying he was going to kill all the men on the plane and it would be a 'blood bath,'" Olsen told The National Desk in an email Monday night. "Two of the passengers were trying to calm him down, but he was just getting more upset.
