Man arrested for string of car break-ins throughout Altoona, police say
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — Altoona police say they’ve arrested the man responsible for a string of car break-ins throughout the city.
According to the Altoona Police Department, 34-year-old Anthony Gottlieb is facing charges including theft from a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, prohibited offensive weapons and other related charges.
Police said they had surveillance video of thefts from vehicles and they were able to identify him after he stole some security cameras from an elevator at Ida Towers on 12th Street.
The cameras were reportedly worth more than $1,000.
On Christmas Eve, police say they were out patrolling neighborhoods and actively looking for people breaking into cars.
That’s when they say they were called to the 1900 block of Logan Ave. for reports of a man with a backpack trying to open the doors of parked cars.
According to police, officers found Gottlieb hiding among the crash at J&P Auto Mart on Pleasant Valley Blvd.
They say he had cash, winning scratch off lottery tickets, debit cards, gift cards and other related items.
Detectives say they’re working to connect Gottlieb with other incidents reported in the city.
He’s being lodged in the Blair County Prison in lieu of $125,000 bail.
