The rapper was born Christopher Brian Bridges on September 11, 1977, to Wayne Brian Bridges and Roberta Shield. He was born in Champaign, Illinois, the only child of his parents. Perhaps this explains his attachment to them both even after they parted ways. He is African American and also has Native American heritage. Ludacris attended a handful of secondary schools. He began his education at Emerson Middle School in Oak Park before spending a year at Oak Park and River Forest High School. He also attended Centerville High School for a year and then Banneker High School in Atlanta, Georgia, where he eventually graduated. In 1995, Ludacris enrolled at Georgia State University and enrolled in a music management program. He finished in 1999.
After moving to Atlanta with his mother, his divorce from his father, he had greater musical exposure. Although he started rapping since the age of nine, his move to Atlanta at the age of twelve allowed him to join a rap group, Loudmouth Hooligans. Ludacris interned at Hot 107.9 (formerly Hot 97.5) in Atlanta, where he later worked as a DJ before beginning to record his debut album, Incognegro, in 1998.
