Born as Joel Edward McHale on November 20, 1971, in Rome, the actor is the son of Laurie and Jack McHale. His father was the dean of studies at Loyola University in Rome at the time of his birth. Joel’s father is from Chicago, Illinois and his mother is from Vancouver, Canada.

The Irish/Norwegian descendant was raised in the Catholic faith and he was raised in Mercer Island, Washington and for a short time in Haddonfield, New Jersey near Philadelphia before eventually returning to Washington where he attended Mercer Island High School studied. Joel McHale continued his education and transferred to the University of Washington, where she received her bachelor’s degree in history in 1995.
