Duo charged with homicide after Clearfield Co. man shot during custody exchange
UPDATE |
CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — State police in Clearfield County are providing new details on Saturday's deadly shooting in Morris Township as authorities say two people are now facing homicide charges in the case.
According to the affidavit, police say troopers were dispatched to a residence along Albert Lane late Saturday night for a reported fatal shooting.
Police say the victim, 33-year-old Kodey Parks, was reportedly found with multiple gunshot wounds to his body.
Officials say Parks' cause of death was later ruled a homicide due to a gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators say the shooting was reported by Parks' ex-wife, 37-year-old Danielle Parks.
According to the affidavit, troopers learned that the two had arranged for a custody exchange to take place at the Morris Township residence on Saturday evening.
Police say Danielle Parks initially told investigators that after the exchange, Kodey had allegedly "chased her" into the home because he "wanted to talk with her" about their recent divorce.
"Why can't we work things out?," Kodey is alleged to have asked his ex-wife while "tackling her" on the stairs inside the home.
Police say during the altercation, Danielle Parks claimed that she pulled a handgun from her waistband and shot her ex-husband "multiple times."
Troopers say she stated that she then ran outside, brought her children into the house and called 911.
Police say during a second interview, Danielle Parks reportedly changed her story and stated that her ex-husband initially left the residence, following the custody exchange, but then returned a few moments later.
Authorities say Danielle Parks once again claimed that her ex-husband "chased her" up the stairs and "tackled her."
During the second interview, however, authorities say Danielle Parks claimed that her boyfriend, 48-year-old Bryan Michaelis, who was reportedly sitting outside the home in a vehicle, intervened during the altercation.
Police say Danielle Parks stated that the gun "fell out" of her waistband as Michaelis attempted to separate the pair.
Troopers say Michaelis is then accused of picking up the gun and shooting Kodey Parks multiple times.
Police say Danielle Parks once again stated that she then brought her kids into the home, but claimed that her and Michaelis then left the Morris Township residence.
Investigators say the pair allegedly drove to the residence of a nearby acquaintance, where Michaelis reportedly instructed Danielle Parks to fire the gun used in the shooting so that "there would be gunshot residue on her hands."
Police say Danielle Parks stated that she then returned to the Morris Township residence, which reportedly is owned by her relatives, and called 911.
Upon further investigation, police learned that Michaelis had contacted the acquaintance, on the night of the shooting, and told the property owner that he and Danielle Parks were at the residence.
Police say the property owner also told police that she noticed that her home surveillance footage had been disabled.
Troopers say that when they searched the residence, they discovered evidence of burnt clothing and a blanket near the property owner's fire pit.
Authorities say that as they continued to investigate the shooting, they also learned of a prior incident involving Michaelis in which he reportedly claimed to have been "run off the road" by Kodey Parks.
Troopers say the incident reportedly occurred on Feb. 7 and that an investigation led to summary charges being filed against Michaelis.
Police also noted in the affidavit that Michaelis was then jailed for a short time, after the Feb. 7th incident.
Investigators then learned of a prison phone call, between Michaelis and Danielle Parks, in which he reportedly made threats towards Kodey Parks, stating "I'm coming back for him. One day."
Police say Danielle Parks reportedly responded by telling Michaelis, "don't do anything you would go to jail for."
Troopers say Michaelis was released from jail the day before the shooting, at which time the pair reportedly drove to a nearby business to purchase a .22 caliber handgun.
Investigators noted that the gun purchased was the same weapon used in the shooting of Kodey Parks.
Police say they were also sent screenshots of text messages, between Kodey Parks and a "third-party" individual who arranged the custody exchange, in which Parks states that he believes the exchange is "a set up."
According to online court records, both Michaelis and Daniel Parks were arraigned Thursday afternoon on a variety of charges, including criminal homicide, conspiracy, aggravated assault and evidence tampering.
They are both being held at the Clearfield County Correctional Facility and their bail was denied.
