Greater Johnstown Elementary School celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday all week long
JOHNSTOWN - Many schools throughout the Johnstown are celebrating Dr. Seuss’ 109th birthday today.
However, Greater Johnstown Elementary School decided to celebrate it throughout the whole week.
Quinn Komar, a fourth-grader at the Greater Johnstown Elementary School, and her classmates are celebrating by reading Dr. Seuss’ books and dressing up according to the themes of his stories.
“Dr. Seuss is very fun, he likes to rhyme and he's goofy and other authors are not like him,” Quinn says.
The school’s librarian, Melanie Moore, says she is joining the kids in all the fun.
“He has a big imagination, and that's what we like to bring to the kids. If you can use your imagination, look how far you can go,” Moore says.
Moore says Dr. Seuss’ books were one of the reasons behind her becoming a librarian.
“It's a life lesson. If you read a lot and if you pay attention, then you'll be able to carry that throughout your whole life, like I did, and even became a librarian. I've always had Dr. Seuss, and he helped me through my whole life,” Moore says.
Moore says a child’s love of reading shouldn’t stop at school. She says parents can help build their kid’s skills right at home.
“As they're going through the store, if they're walking out in the park and they see a sign, they can say, OK let's read that sign. It doesn't have to be a book,” she said.
