Romances have been a part of the Baldur’s Gate franchise for a long time now. First introduced in Baldur’s Gate 2, they were revolutionary for their time, and allowed players to form complex romantic relationships with some of their companions. It should come as no surprise that Baldur’s Gate III is taking this gameplay system to a new level. You will be able to romance all of your Companions in the game, regardless of your gender, race, or class. Though, there are a couple of things about this that you will need to be aware of. How do Romances Work in BG3?

Each of the following companions in the game can be romanced. These are: Astarion, Shadowheart, Gale, Lae’zel, Wyll, Karlach, Halsin, Jaheira, Minthara, and Minsc. It doesn’t matter if the Companion in question is an Origin one, or a character that you can only recruit but not select to play as during character creation – such as Jaheira and Minsc – you will be able to romance them regardless. The exception to this is the Dark Urge Origin, which is only available for the player character, and won’t appear as a separate Companion if you don’t select to play as the Durge. There’s also the option to romance other players.

Likewise, while romances in BG2 were gated by things such as your gender and race, you don’t need to worry about that in BG3. So simply make the character you want to, you will still have full access to all the potential romances in the game. Though, just like in real life, in order to build a romantic relationship with someone, they need to like you first. In Baldur’s Gate 3, the way that this works is by gaining approval with characters. Each Companion has their own set of likes and dislikes.

For example, Shadowheart appreciates kindness and generally avoiding conflict. On the other hand, Lae’zel prefers the direct (and usually bloody) method to problem-solving.
