ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) – Chick-fil-A in Altoona invited firefighters to eat for free Wednesday.

Franchise co-owner Jessica Burgmeier said firefighters have their choice of either a free chicken sandwich or eight-count breaded nugget item.

Firefighters who wore a uniform, department attire or presented a valid ID could pick up the free meal from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This event only went on at Chick-fil-A's Altoona location.

Burgmeier said firefighters filtered in and out of the restaurant all day.

She said the men and women were very appreciative when receiving the free meal.

The offer comes in the middle of National Fire Prevention Week, which started Sunday and runs through Saturday.

Burgmeier said she and her husband are always looking for ways to reach out to the community and give back.

"We wanted to have something that would just bring the community together and we thought this would be a good idea,” Burgmeier said. “We just do this as a thank you more than anything. We really can't give much back other than food, so why not give the food. Food makes people happy and it’s Chick-fil-A."

Burgmeier said it sounds like just a free chicken sandwich or box of nuggets, but it's really a thank-you to firefighters for everything they do.
